"Chakra" is a Sanskrit word meaning wheel. In yogic traditions, chakras are energy centres along the spine.

The seven main chakras

Chakra Location Themes often linked to it
Root Base of the spine Safety, grounding
Sacral Lower belly Creativity, emotion
Solar plexus Upper belly Confidence, will
Heart Centre of the chest Love, connection
Throat Throat Expression, truth
Third eye Between the brows Intuition, insight
Crown Top of the head Spiritual connection

What chakra balancing involves

In a session you rest while the healer works gently across each centre, often with breath, mantra or light touch with your consent. Sessions usually take around 60 minutes.

A simple daily practice

  1. Sit comfortably and take three slow breaths.
  2. Bring your attention to the base of your spine, then slowly up through each centre.
  3. At each one, breathe in, and imagine a soft light.
  4. Finish by feeling your feet on the floor.

It takes five minutes and many people find it calming.
